Hexham Abbey

Hexham Abbey gives the town its most memorable interior: tall stone arcades, painted panels and the surviving traces of a much older religious community. Take a slow look around the church, then use the Big Story exhibition to put the building and its people in context. The small Anglo-Saxon crypt is an optional, separately charged descent rather than the whole reason to come.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary sightseeing works around worship. Ask a steward about crypt access on the day; availability depends on services and events. Concerts and special events may require separate tickets. Donations support free general visits.
Access and getting around: The Abbey describes the main visitor areas as accessible, except the crypt, which has steep, deep steps. Ask staff about the best entrance and any event-related restrictions; the crypt is not a wheelchair route.

Visiting with children: The free Big Story exhibition includes hands-on monastic activities and models, a useful change of pace from quietly looking around the church. Supervise children on any crypt descent and consider whether the confined space suits them.
