Hexham Old Gaol
The Old Gaol uses its thick-walled medieval building to explore imprisonment and the turbulent border country around Hexham. Displays about local life and the Border Reivers give the town a different story from the Abbey. The glass lift offers a brief view into the dungeon, while the upper floors reward time with the interpretation rather than a quick photograph outside.
There are no toilets, baby-changing facilities or café inside. Make a comfort stop before visiting, particularly with children.

- Regular opening is Wednesday–Sunday, with some holiday variations. Adult admission provides an annual pass; online day tickets can be converted at the venue. Check current exhibitions and opening before making this the focus of a Monday or Tuesday.
- Access and getting around
- A ramp and push-button entrance lead to a wheelchair-accessible lift serving all floors. Spiral stairs are uneven. The dungeon is viewed from inside the lift, whose doors remain closed. Seating, ear defenders and a visual story are available.

- Under-18 admission is free, with adults paying. Activity trollies cater for children aged three and above, but the imprisonment themes and dungeon audio may unsettle some visitors. Check the Sound Down Sunday programme for reduced sound.
