The Iron Bridge and Toll House

Walk across the cast-iron span that gave Ironbridge its name, pause above the Severn and look at the individual pieces that make up its great arch. The Toll House beside the southern end adds the story of crossing charges and the people whose journeys passed this way. This is the most manageable starting point for a short town visit.

Before you go

Visit in daylight: English Heritage says the bridge is not lit at night. Crossing the bridge and entering the Toll House have different access conditions.

Where to find it: Ironbridge town centre, spanning the Severn; southern approach beside the Toll House and Station Yard.

Tickets and booking: The bridge is free to cross during reasonable daylight hours. Check the National Trust calendar separately for the Toll House, currently open daily. Nearby town parking charges apply.
Access and getting around: English Heritage describes the bridge as wheelchair accessible. Approaches can slope and pavements can be busy. The Toll House has an entrance step, limited space and stairs to its upper floor; ask staff about interpretation available on the lower level.

Visiting with children: A short crossing and a look at the ironwork can suit children who would tire of a long museum visit. Stay together near the river and on busy approaches; the bridge is for pedestrians.
