Buildwas Abbey

Explore the remains of a Cistercian abbey in a wooded setting beside the Severn, about two miles west of Ironbridge. The church and vaulted chapter house make the site rewarding without requiring a long visit, with surviving stonework and tiles giving a sense of how the buildings fitted together. Bring curiosity and time to pause rather than a packed schedule.

Before you go

There are no visitor toilets at the abbey. Use facilities in Ironbridge before travelling, and check the approach carefully if arriving without a car.

Where to find it: Buildwas, on the south bank of the Severn beside the A4169, two miles west of Ironbridge; TF8 7BW.

Tickets and booking: General entry is free, with seasonal opening hours and some Christmas closures. Parking is charged for non-members under the current main visitor page. The second-hand bookshop depends on volunteer opening and is not essential to the visit.
Access and getting around: Steps lead from the car park, with an alternative ramp over grass. The main site is largely level but has low walls and unguarded drops. Grass and steps can be slippery after rain. English Heritage warns there is no pavement for the final 100 metres of the road approach.

Visiting with children: A short outdoor exploration can suit children, with close supervision around drops and fragile masonry. Do not climb the ruins. Bring a drink and use toilets before leaving town; this is not an indoor wet-weather option.
