MacLellan’s Castle

This compact castle tells a story of status and domestic comfort rather than a remote battlefield stronghold. The great hall reopened in September 2026 after conservation, adding more interior space to explore, while other areas remain restricted. Combine the visit with lunch and the public streets around it instead of treating it as a long excursion outside town.

Read the current access notice and seasonal dates. The castle closes from October through March, and has a lunchtime closure during its open season.

Tickets and booking: Paid tickets are currently sold on site. Open April–September, with a 12.30–1pm lunch closure and last entry half an hour before closing. Closed October–March; check current restrictions before visiting.
Access and getting around: This is a roofless historic ruin with uneven surfaces and stairs to the great hall. Some areas remain closed during conservation; contact the operator about the parts accessible to your group rather than assuming full access.

Visiting with children: Look for clues to how people lived here, with close supervision on stairs and around uneven ruins. Keep the visit short if the children prefer the woodland or harbour part of the day.
