Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces

Explore the surviving halls, courtyards and architectural details of Kirkwall’s neighbouring palace ruins. Their different eras reveal the town’s Norse and later Scottish connections. These are partly exposed historic remains with substantial steps, not furnished indoor houses or a dependable all-weather shelter.

The palaces are closed on 15 and 16 September 2026. The upper Moosie Tower level also remains closed; check current access before booking another date.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary entry is paid. The normal season is April–September, with a lunchtime closure and last entry before closing; the site closes October–March. The specific 15–16 Septemberclosure takes precedence. Check the live calendar and restrictions before purchasing.
Access and getting around: Entry routes involve steps, including wooden steps into the Bishop’s Palace and steps on both approaches to the Earl’s Palace. Upper areas use stone and spiral stairs, with some sections lacking a handrail. Discuss access needs first; there is no fully step-free palace route.

Visiting with children: Best for children comfortable with historic stairs and uneven ruins. Keep close on upper routes and choose a short exploration rather than expecting a hands-on play attraction. Weather affects the exposed parts.
