Kirkwall harbour and historic streets
Follow the public waterfront and the linked streets of Bridge, Albert, Broad and Victoria for a sense of Kirkwall’s everyday life and historic shape. Heritage panels and independent shops give you reasons to pause, while the harbour remains a working place. Choose a short route rather than treating the whole town as an attraction circuit to complete.

Central Kirkwall Pier is not Hatston terminal. Confirm the correct ferry or cruise return point before judging how much walking time you have.

- No attraction ticket is needed for an ordinary public-street walk. Food, shopping and any guided tour are separate. Leave time for the correct terminal transfer and follow current harbour-access signs.
- Access and getting around
- Use public pavements and crossings, checking surfaces and kerbs for your route. The waterfront is exposed and working quays have restricted access. Public toilets are listed at several town locations, with opening and key arrangements varying.

- Choose a few things to spot, such as boats or architectural details, and keep close near traffic and water. Add a food stop before tiredness sets in rather than expecting children to follow a long historical route.
