Knaresborough Castle and Courthouse Museum

Explore the ruined royal stronghold above the Nidd and the Tudor courtroom in the neighbouring museum. The hilltop position explains much of the castle’s appeal: you can connect the town’s history with the river gorge and railway viaduct below. The grounds also make a worthwhile shorter visit without entering the paid museum.

Before you go

Decide between a free grounds visit and the ticketed buildings before planning your time. The Sallyport tunnel is a separate guided experience; check whether a tour actually runs on your date.

Tickets and booking: Paid visits follow seasonal hours: normally Tuesday–Sunday in April–October and Wednesday–Saturday in November–March. Bank holiday Mondays are closed. The grounds remain open year-round. Confirm access to individual castle areas and book or enquire about separately charged Sallyport tours.
Access and getting around: Historic steps, uneven surfaces and steep terrain limit wheelchair access. The council describes a steep uphill walk from the railway station. Ask which museum and castle areas suit your needs. Public accessible toilets and baby changing are in Castle Yard car park, rather than inside the museum.

Visiting with children: The Castle Critters Activity Room offers play and craft opportunities when available. Check access and any activity arrangements; putting, bowls and guided tours may have separate charges. Keep children away from exposed edges and fragile masonry.
