Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag
Visit a tiny medieval chapel carved into the cliff beside Abbey Road. Its doorway, window and stone interior reward a focused look, and its continuing role as a place of prayer gives it a different character from the larger castle site. This is a specific seasonal visit, not an interior you can count on finding open during any riverside walk.
The trust’s regular 2026 Sunday openings finish on 27 September. Confirm your date and the weather before walking out along Abbey Road; organised visits at other times need an arrangement.

- General visiting welcomes donations. Regular 2026 opening is Sundays 2–4pm through 27 September, weather permitting. Check the trust’s current notice; visits or services outside that schedule need advance contact. Do not rely on an exterior walk to guarantee admission.
- Access and getting around
- A small historic rock-cut space with a garden approach; the trust does not provide a complete step-free access statement. Ask about the route, doorway and any specific needs before travelling. Abbey Road has stretches without a pavement, and the climb back into town takes extra effort.

- Best for children interested in a small, unusual historic place who can respect a prayer space. Keep the visit brief and supervise the road approach. This is different from St Robert’s Cave and from Mother Shipton’s paid woodland attraction.
