LANARK GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Cotton mills, working lives and a historic village / NEAR LANARK

The New Lanark Experience

Explore the paid visitor attraction within New Lanark’s historic mill village, choosing the displays and buildings that interest you most. Machinery, domestic rooms and the story of Robert Owen help explain how work and social reform shaped this place beside the Clyde. Give the museum experience time rather than treating it as a quick entrance on the way to the waterfalls.

Before you go

New Lanark is a separate village below Lanark. The paid museum, public village setting and free Falls of Clyde reserve have different access arrangements; they are not one interchangeable ticketed attraction.

The practical details

Where to find it
New Lanark World Heritage Site, New Lanark ML11 9DB
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
The New Lanark Experience requires paid admission; parking is separately charged by a third-party operator. Check the current ticket inclusions and opening calendar. Do not copy older tourism listings that describe parking as free.
Access and getting around
The village sits in a steep-sided valley with slopes, uneven surfaces and changes of level. Read the operator’s access and sensory guides and discuss the areas you wish to visit. The car-park shuttle currently runs Friday–Monday only; arrange alternative drop-off needs directly.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Focus on selected stories, machinery and rooms, taking a break before attention fades. Check the sensory guide and current family activities. Soft play, special events and workshops should be checked separately rather than assumed part of every museum ticket.

Practical information checked 16 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–3 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
