Lancaster Castle

Join a guided visit through the castle’s history of justice and imprisonment. Its courtrooms and prison spaces make this a very different experience from a ruined fortress: the stories concern real trials, punishments and the people caught up in them. Outside, the great gate and courtyards can be appreciated on a shorter visit.

Buy the day’s tour ticket at the castle before committing to another timed activity. Ordinary tours cannot be booked online and may sell out.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary guided tours run daily except over Christmas, with tickets sold on site for that day, first come first served. Times can change or tours be cancelled. The published summer timetable ends 30 October 2026. Allow about 60–75 minutes on the tour itself. Courtyard entry is free; paid tours provide most interior access. Assistance dogs only, including in the courtyards.
Access and getting around: All approaches climb a hill. The tour has uneven floors, low doorways and many stairs; it is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Call the guides before visiting with limited mobility. The free courtyards are a different visit from the interior route.

Visiting with children: Tours discuss execution and physical punishment, including hanging. Consider children’s interests and sensitivities before joining. Babies must be carried if they cannot walk; ask about buggy storage. Under-fives enter the ordinary tour free.
