Lancaster City Museum
Explore Lancaster’s development through objects, pictures and local stories inside its former town hall on Market Square. The same building houses the King’s Own Royal Regiment collection. Choose a theme that interests you rather than trying to absorb every case, leaving time for the changing ground-floor exhibition.
This is no longer free for every adult visitor. Check whether you qualify for free entry, or compare the council museums’ multipass if visiting the Maritime Museum too.

- Normally open Friday–Tuesday, 10.30am–4pm; closed Wednesday and Thursday, with Christmas/New Year exceptions. Nonlocal adults pay. LA1–LA6 residents and full-time students qualify for free admission; bring relevant evidence. A carer accompanying a disabled visitor enters free. Choose a car park rather than navigating into pedestrian Market Square.
- Access and getting around
- The entrance has a ramp and the upper floor a stairlift rated to 250kg. Upper-floor wheelchair access is limited to one person at a time and requires ability to transfer into an evacuation chair; check equipment and staff arrangements ahead. There are no public toilets or baby-changing facilities here; the nearest are in Marketgate Shopping Centre.

- Under-18s enter free. Pushchairs fit on the ground floor but must be carried upstairs or left downstairs. Ask at the Access Hub for sensory items and other support resources, and use the visual story before visiting.
