Hilltop parkland, views & play / LANCASTER
Williamson Park and Ashton Memorial
Spend time among woodland paths and play areas below the domed Ashton Memorial. The hilltop setting gives broad views towards Morecambe Bay when conditions are clear. The park makes a substantial outdoor outing away from the compact heritage streets, with a short memorial visit when the building is available.

The council currently reports the café and shop closed after storm damage. Bring a picnic or confirm outdoor food concessions and toilet arrangements before relying on the park for lunch.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Quernmore Road and Wyresdale Road, Lancaster LA1 1UX
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- The park grounds and Ashton Memorial have free ordinary entry; animal attractions, parking and special events are separate. Published visitor hours are 10am–5pm April–September and 10am–4pm October–March, excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Check memorial access around private events and current storm-recovery notices.
- Access and getting around
- The park is hilly; the Wyresdale Road car park has an uphill route to the main facilities. Quernmore Road is closer to the main attractions. A lift serves the memorial’s ground floor; upper levels require stairs. Check lift availability and accessible toilets during the café-building closure.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Play areas and short woodland walks can fill a visit without an animal ticket. The Butterfly House and Mini Zoo cost extra, with under-threes free, and remain advertised as open during the café closure. Choose a manageable route and leave energy for the return downhill.
