Largs promenade and the Pencil
Walk the central seafront and, if you want a longer outing, continue south towards the Pencil monument near the marina. The coastal views and the monument’s link to the Battle of Largs give the route a clear theme. You can turn back well before the monument and still enjoy the town’s familiar seaside setting.
Before you go
The Pencil is a commemorative monument, not an open visitor centre or a guaranteed marker of the exact battlefield. Allow for the walk back to town rather than planning only the outward distance.

- No walking admission is required. Food, parking and ferry trips are separate costs. Use the council heritage trail as background, following current signs on the ground; no monument-interior access or annual festival is included.
- Access and getting around
- Choose a suitable section of the promenade and check local surfaces, crossings and any works. The longer heritage trail covers more than the seafront, so its whole route should not be assumed level or step-free. Exposed sections can be uncomfortable in strong wind.

- Watch the boats, look for details linked to local history and choose a turnaround before children get tired. Supervise at roads, slipways and the water’s edge; this is not a traffic-free playground throughout.
