Royal Armouries Museum

Armour made for kings, Japanese swords and an extraordinary suit of elephant armour give this Leeds Dock museum its scale and variety. Choose a few galleries and a live demonstration rather than trying to absorb every weapon and period. The setting also gives you a different view of Leeds from the shopping streets around the station.

Look at the daily programme on arrival and fit the galleries around one demonstration. Book free admission ahead for busy dates; special exhibitions and activities can cost extra.

Tickets and booking: General galleries, daily shows and combat demonstrations are free. Advance booking is recommended rather than compulsory. Usually closed Mondays in term time, with daily opening during school holidays; check the date-specific calendar. Optional activities and exhibitions have their own charges.
Access and getting around: Galleries have lift access, seating and some low lighting. Sensory backpacks and a small quiet room are available; ask about availability. Outdoor performance spaces have separate access limitations. The dock has deep water.

Visiting with children: A strong choice for children interested in armour and historical demonstrations, but themes include warfare and violence. Under-16s need a responsible adult. Use the indoor picnic area for a proper break and supervise children beside the dock.
