Thackray Museum of Medicine

Follow the story of public health from a recreated Victorian Leeds street to medical inventions and debates about care today. The museum combines striking historical scenes with hands-on questions, giving curious adults and older children plenty to discuss. It stands beside St James’s Hospital, outside the central walking cluster.

Tickets and booking: Choose your own price uses a paid lower-cost tier, not unrestricted free admission. Children aged six and under and eligible essential companions enter free; other concession schemes require evidence. Check current terms and Tuesday holiday exceptions. The bus journey from the centre needs waiting and walking time as well as travel.
Access and getting around: The venue states wheelchair and buggy access throughout, with essential companions free. Quiet openings are advertised for the last Sunday morning of each month; confirm the session. Use the gallery sensory map and discuss any particular requirements before booking.

Visiting with children: Disease Street includes smells and historical suffering, while the operating-theatre story deals with surgery before anaesthetics. Make an informed choice for each child. Sparks! is separately booked soft play for under-fives and does not require a museum ticket.
