LEICESTER GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Parks & outdoors / LEICESTER

Abbey Park

The River Soar divides this north-of-centre park into garden landscapes and the grounds of a former abbey. Choose a short walk among the ruins, a garden loop or time at the play area. It offers a change of pace from indoor attractions without turning the day into a countryside excursion.

Before you go

Choose an entrance and turnaround point before starting, especially with children or limited energy. Park opening does not guarantee the café, miniature railway or other seasonal features are operating.

The practical details

Where to find it
Abbey Park Road / St Margaret’s Way, Leicester
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
General park access is free. Parking, refreshments and some activities cost extra. Check gate and facility hours before a late visit, and current weather or path notices before choosing a riverside route. Bring a picnic if café service is uncertain.
Access and getting around
The council describes level paths through most of the park and step-free access to the main garden and historic areas. Accessible toilets are near the café and a Changing Places facility is listed. Check current availability and approach routes; riverside conditions and individual paths vary.

Visiting with children
The play area and open grass make this a useful outdoor family choice. Supervise children beside the river and lake. Treat railway rides and other attractions as optional extras with their own operating dates, rather than the basis of the outing.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1–2 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
