Erasmus Darwin House

Meet the doctor, inventor and poet Erasmus Darwin in his former family home beside Cathedral Close. Interactive displays explore a life of medicine, science and ideas that preceded his grandson Charles. The herb garden adds a small outdoor pause and a link with the household’s use of plants.

Use the Cathedral Close entrance for step-free museum access. Check the seasonal weekday pattern: Wednesday is closed, with Tuesday also closed in the winter timetable.

Tickets and booking: Until 24 October 2026, open Thursday–Tuesday, 11am–5pm, last entry 4.15pm. From 25 October to 28 March 2027, open Thursday–Monday, 11am–4pm, last entry 3.15pm. Private functions may close the house. Buy ordinary tickets at the door subject to availability; arrange free carer admission with the office. Herb-garden entry is free; cellar tours and booked refreshments are separate.
Access and getting around: The Cathedral Close entrance is step-free, with a lift to the museum floors and an accessible toilet. Contact staff about lift dimensions and any particular requirements. The separately guided cellars are a different route; check their suitability rather than relying on the museum-floor access information.

Visiting with children: Look for Erasmouse, try the interactive displays and ask about dressing up and the garden explorer trail. Children aged 11 and under enter free with an adult ticket holder. There is nappy changing and space to leave pushchairs.
