Lincoln Castle

The castle brings together different kinds of power: defensive walls, the Victorian prison and the document displays in the Magna Carta Vault. Give the prison and vault time rather than treating the whole visit as a viewpoint. The grounds also offer breathing space between the more concentrated indoor experiences.

The wall walk is only partially open during repairs and the available stepped route is unsuitable for wheelchair users. Check which charter is on display if Magna Carta itself is the main reason for coming.

Tickets and booking: The paid experience covers ticketed attractions; ordinary grounds entry is free, subject to event arrangements. Compare the exact ticket options. Documents rotate for conservation, and weather or repairs can close outdoor sections.
Access and getting around: Use the East Gate accessible route; the West Gate ramp is too steep. The vault has lift access, and prison floors have a lift, but some cells and walkways are narrow. The current partial wall route has steep steps and is not wheelchair-accessible.

Visiting with children: Pushchairs may enter the grounds but should be left in the designated place for the wall walk. Ask for a Take a Break Bag with ear defenders and sensory items if helpful. Consider whether prison stories suit your child.
