Steep Hill and The Strait

The climb between the lower city and the Cathedral Quarter is part of Lincoln’s character. Look at the old shopfronts, building shapes and glimpses uphill, with time to stop when a detail catches your eye. You can enjoy a short section without turning it into a test of endurance or buying anything.

Before you go

The name is literal: steep gradients and cobbles make this an unsuitable route for many mobility needs. Reach the Cathedral Quarter by suitable transport if the climb or descent would be difficult.

Where to find it: The Strait and Steep Hill, between the High Street and Castle Hill.

Tickets and booking: No ticket to explore the public street. Shop and café hours vary, and purchases are optional. The walking allowance includes looking and pauses, not the journey all the way from the station.
Access and getting around: Visit Lincoln explicitly describes Steep Hill as unsuitable for wheelchair users and people with mobility needs. Cobbles can be awkward underfoot; downhill is not a step-free workaround. Check current uphill bus or taxi options instead.

Visiting with children: A pushchair on this gradient can be hard to control in either direction. Choose a short look, keep children close on uneven surfaces and use transport uphill where that makes the outing easier.
