LIVINGSTON GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

River paths and ancient woodland / NEAR LIVINGSTON

Almondell and Calderwood Country Park

Explore a riverside country park with two different characters: Almondell’s more developed paths and visitor-centre area, and the less formal ancient woodland of Calderwood. A mapped route helps you choose the right length and terrain before you leave the main paths.

Before you go

The visitor centre has dated staffing closures as well as its usual lunch break. Check the council notice; outdoor access continuing does not guarantee an open information desk or every facility.

The practical details

Where to find it

Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary country-park admission is free. Centre and toilet hours change seasonally, with specific holiday closures. Organised activities and room hire are separate. Arrange the transfer from Livingston to the chosen entrance.
Access and getting around
Almondell includes surfaced routes and a tarmac road; Calderwood’s paths are more uneven and undulating. Choose the appropriate car park and route from the council map. Ask about gradients and toilet access rather than assuming the two areas have identical access.

Visiting with children
The play area near the visitor centre can anchor a shorter family visit. Keep children close around rivers, bridges and shared routes, and avoid extending into rougher woodland simply because it appears nearby on a map.

Practical information checked 16 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–4 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
