LLANGOLLEN GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

The curved weir that feeds the canal / NEAR LLANGOLLEN

Horseshoe Falls

See the broad curved weir built to supply the Llangollen Canal with water from the Dee. Its engineering story is as important as the riverside view: this is a designed weir rather than a natural waterfall. Visit from Llantysilio Green for a shorter outing, or make the canal towpath from Llangollen the main walk of your day.

Before you go

The car park does not provide a level approach to the water. The descent is steep and grassy, with roots, rocks and restrictive gates near the weir; choose a different outing if wet ground or the slope will make the return difficult.

The practical details

Where to find it
Llantysilio Green, near Llangollen LL20 8BT
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Viewing has no attraction admission charge, but Llantysilio Green parking is paid, with National Trust member arrangements. Check gate times and current notices. The towpath approach from town is just under two miles each way: allow walking and rest time in both directions.
Access and getting around
The official visitor information describes a steep grassy descent, kissing gates and uneven riverside ground. These restrict wheelchair access. Llantysilio Green has an accessible toilet and baby changing, but those facilities do not make the path to the falls accessible.

Visiting with children
Supervise closely beside the fast river and canal; keep the outing to viewing from land. Bring footwear with grip and avoid the descent after heavy rain if it is slippery. A picnic on suitable ground above the river can be a better choice than pushing everyone down to the edge.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–75 minutes from llantysilio green; longer for the towpath walk for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
