LLANGOLLEN GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

The home of the Ladies of Llangollen / LLANGOLLEN

Plas Newydd, Llangollen

Visit the Gothicised home of Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, whose life together made Llangollen a destination for notable visitors. The house and gardens give two different ways to explore their story: paid house admission for the interiors, or a free garden visit when you want a shorter outdoor stop. This is the council-run property in Llangollen, not the National Trust house on Anglesey.

Before you go

Scaffolding is currently in place for maintenance and restoration. Check the rooms and garden routes available before travelling; the house and tearoom have shorter opening periods than the grounds.

The practical details

Where to find it
Hill Street, Llangollen LL20 8AW
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Buy house tickets at the tearoom under the current arrangements. Gardens are ordinarily free from morning to sunset, while house entry is paid; carers accompanying disabled visitors enter free. Check seasonal hours and current works. Groups of fifteen or more should book ahead.
Access and getting around
The Dell is below the house with sloping paths. A viewing platform provides a way to look into it without descending; improved paths do not remove all gradients. Confirm current house-room access, toilet provision and any work-related diversions with the venue before booking.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Under-fives enter the house free on the current tariff; older children have paid admission. Combine a short look at the rooms with the garden, supervising near the stream and on slopes. Dogs are permitted in the grounds on leads; check any indoor assistance-dog arrangements directly.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1½–2 hours for house and garden for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
