LLANGOLLEN GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A free medieval abbey visit near Llangollen / NEAR LLANGOLLEN

Valle Crucis Abbey

Explore the ruined Cistercian abbey at Llantysilio, with its surviving west front, chapter house and monastic setting. It is a rewarding short visit if you enjoy stonework and imagining how a community used its buildings. The site is outside Llangollen, so give it a separate journey rather than treating it as part of a town-centre stroll.

Before you go

Cadw currently operates the abbey as a free, unmanned site with daytime opening. Check the latest notice before setting off, and plan food and toilets independently of a staffed visitor centre.

The practical details

Where to find it
Llantysilio, near Llangollen LL20 8DD
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary admission is currently free without a booked ticket. The site has opening and closing times, holiday closures and possible weather disruption. It is roughly two miles outside Llangollen: arrange an outward and return road journey, or choose a properly planned walking route.
Access and getting around
Cadw lists firm, level paths around the grass-covered ruins and wheelchair access. The small parking area has one designated disabled space, approximately 50 metres from the entrance. Historic surfaces and weather still matter; check the route that suits you and do not assume every surviving room has the same access.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Keep children close around uneven masonry, changes in level and water. Looking for arches and different room shapes makes a manageable short visit. Bring a picnic if desired and use the designated tables; keep dogs on short leads.
