LOCHWINNOCH GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A separate countryside outing above Lochwinnoch / LOCHWINNOCH

Muirshiel Country Park and Windy Hill

Head up the glen for a different landscape from the lochshore, with a walk towards Windy Hill when conditions and the group’s ability suit. This is a more exposed countryside choice with its own approach road, route and weather decision. It should not be treated as an extra few minutes tacked onto a village stroll.

Before you go

The approach is around three miles up a single-track road from Lochwinnoch. Plan the journey and a sensible walking turnaround before leaving the lower village.

The practical details

Where to find it
Calderglen Road, Muirshiel Country Park, Lochwinnoch PA12 4LB
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Public park entry and parking are free. No attraction ticket is needed for ordinary walking, but transport, weather, daylight and current route information need planning. Do not assume the visitor centre is open outside its stated seasonal pattern.
Access and getting around
Expect country paths, gradients and exposed sections rather than a fully surfaced level circuit. Check conditions and ask about a suitable shorter route. The visitor centre is listed for summer weekends, so do not rely on staffed shelter or facilities every day.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Choose this for children comfortable with a country walk and change the route if weather or energy deteriorates. Bring food, layers and appropriate footwear; the hill is not a playground or an automatic extension to a pushchair walk.

Practical information checked 16 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–3 hours including a selected walk for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
