LUDLOW GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Marcher fortress and open-air ruins / LUDLOW

Ludlow Castle

Ludlow Castle is a place to read a building through its surviving walls: courtyards, lodgings and the distinctive round chapel reveal how a border stronghold became a centre of government and court life. Explore at ground level or use the open stairways and towers that suit you. Much of the visit is outdoors, with the surrounding town and countryside part of its appeal.

Before you go

Check the dated opening calendar before travelling: festivals and private events can replace ordinary castle admission, including time needed before or after the event.

The practical details

Where to find it
Castle Square, at the western end of central Ludlow, SY8 1AY.
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
The current notice announces reopening on 15 September after the Food Festival; check that ordinary entry has resumed. Normal-day tickets can be bought on arrival, while special activities may need separate booking. Winter hours shorten and January to mid-February is normally weekends only.
Access and getting around
Cobbles, grass, gravel and changing ground levels limit access. Most rooms and towers have steps; a bonded-gravel route crosses the inner bailey and the Judges Lodgings offer easier access. Leave through the main gates to avoid the shop exit steps. Accessible toilets are in the shop and café.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Pushchairs are allowed, but cannot reach all rooms and towers. Under-fives enter free; include their complimentary ticket when booking online. Picnics are allowed on ordinary visiting days, with benches in the outer bailey. Supervise children on stairs and uneven ruins.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
