Whitcliffe Common

Across the River Teme from Ludlow, Whitcliffe Common gives the town its classic outward-looking walk. Steep wooded slopes rise to open grass and views of the castle, church and surrounding hills. Choose a short time at the viewpoint or a longer walk through the common, rather than assuming the riverside path and upper ground form an effortless flat circuit.

Before you go

The descent from town and climb onto the common need time and suitable shoes. Use the higher viewpoint approach if a full river-and-hill walk does not suit your group.

Where to find it: Across the Teme, southwest of Ludlow in the Ludford parish area; upper approach from Whitcliffe Road.

Tickets and booking: No general entry charge. Use daylight, check local path notices after poor weather and carry water. Leave enough time to climb back towards town if you descend to the river; organised activities or food purchases are separate.
Access and getting around: The common has steep slopes, stone steps and woodland paths. The riverside Bread Walk includes two flights of steps at the Ludford end and uneven ground near the old quarry. Contact the Trust about the best approach for your mobility needs before choosing a route.

Visiting with children: Keep children close on slopes and near the river, and choose a shorter route before they tire. Woodland and open ground offer an outdoor change from the town. Wear shoes suited to uneven paths and bring water and snacks.
