Eildon Hills walk

Make the Eildons the main outdoor activity if you want a proper climb and broad Borders views. The local North Hill circuit links town paths, the Newstead side and a steep ascent before returning towards Melrose. Extra summits can extend the day, but they are optional additions rather than a requirement.

Before you go

Check wind, visibility and daylight as well as rain. A hill that looks close from the town can still need sturdy footwear, navigation and enough time for a careful descent.

Tickets and booking: Walking access is free. The local route is about 6.5 km, with an operator estimate of 2–2.5 hours without long breaks; allow more for pauses or additional summits. Follow current path notices and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
Access and getting around: The route includes steep gradients, narrow paths and potentially muddy ground. It is not a wheelchair or pushchair outing. Carry a suitable route map and choose a lower alternative if conditions or ability make the climb unsuitable.

Visiting with children: Best considered by families already comfortable with sustained hill walking. It is not included as a default young-family choice; assess each child’s stamina and choose a turnaround before the descent becomes difficult.
