Trimontium Museum

Use the objects in this Melrose museum to explore how Roman soldiers and local communities met in the Borders. Jewellery, equipment and displays provide a more personal starting point than a list of battles. The museum is in town; the archaeological fort landscape at Newstead is a separate outdoor visit. The photograph shows metalwork in an earlier museum display from 2014, rather than the current gallery layout.

Ordinary museum admission does not automatically include a handling workshop, virtual-reality experience or guided fort walk. Choose the format you want and check whether a separate booking is needed.

Tickets and booking: Current museum hours are daily 10:00–16:30. Walk-ins depend on space; advance booking is useful at busy times. Special experiences, workshops and guided walks require booking. The free fort landscape is not the same as paid museum admission.
Access and getting around: The museum is on one level, with portable stools and accessible toilets. Lighting can be raised and audiovisual volume lowered on request; discuss individual needs before arriving and consult the detailed access guide.

Visiting with children: Roman Scout activities and dressing-up offer a focus for children. Ask about age suitability and arrangements for separately booked sessions; the ordinary museum visit can be a shorter choice for younger children.
