Use the museum as the main visit, followed by a river outing matched to your energy.
A riverside route and village views / MELROSE
Walk from Melrose towards the Tweed and Chain Bridge for a different view of the town. You can keep to a short riverside outing or follow the signed Gattonside circular, which adds village lanes and an elevated view back towards the Eildons. Decide which version suits your group before setting off.

The full Gattonside circuit is about 5.5 km and includes a moderate climb. A brief bridge-and-river visit is a shorter alternative, not the whole circuit described as level.
