MILNGAVIE GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Try the opening of a long-distance trail / MILNGAVIE

A short West Highland Way walk

Start at the famous town-centre marker and follow the signed opening of the West Highland Way for as long as suits your group. A short out-and-back lets you experience the departure from town into greener surroundings without turning a casual day out into a full hiking stage. Decide your return point before enthusiasm takes you farther than planned.

Before you go

The complete first stage to Drymen is around 12 miles. This suggestion is a shorter return walk, not that full stage.

The practical details

Where to find it
West Highland Way start in Milngavie town centre
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
No attraction admission charge for the public trail. Check route notices and daylight, and arrange transport independently if attempting a through-walk rather than this out-and-back.
Access and getting around
Surfaces change beyond the paved centre and may be muddy or uneven. Use current route signs and a map, and turn back on the same route if a manageable short walk is the aim. Do not assume a step-free long-distance trail.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Give children a clear small goal and return before they tire. Carry water and suitable shoes; the nearby station and town facilities make a modest walk easier to organise than a full trail stage.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–90 minutes for a chosen out-and-back for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
