A castle’s earthworks in a public park / MOLD

Bailey Hill

Climb towards the green space at the top of Mold’s High Street to understand where the medieval castle stood. The interest is in the shape of the motte and baileys, the trees and the later Gorsedd stones, not a surviving furnished castle. Take a slow circuit and use interpretation where available instead of expecting an extensive indoor attraction.

The park and the staffed centre are different propositions. Plan for the outdoor visit and confirm centre opening if interpretation, a tour or toilets are essential.

Tickets and booking: The public park is free to visit. Centre staffing, tours, events and facilities need a separate current check with Mold Town Council; do not depend on a daily staffed visitor centre or café.
Access and getting around: The redevelopment added ramped access to the centre and inner and outer baileys, but the motte is reached by steps. Slopes still matter; choose a lower circuit and do not assume the highest point is wheelchair accessible.

Visiting with children: Explain that the castle survives mainly as earthworks. Explore permitted paths and any suitable open play space with supervision, rather than climbing banks or expecting castle rooms to enter.
