Murlough National Nature Reserve

Choose Murlough for a nature-focused coastal outing away from the town promenade. The reserve’s paths cross a fragile dune landscape, so use the designated routes and allow time to notice the changing vegetation and views. A boardwalk visit can be worthwhile without continuing onto the beach.

Toilets are seasonal and currently unavailable outside April–August; the nearest public facilities are in Dundrum. Plan before arriving, especially with children or access needs.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary reserve access is free; parking charges apply to non-members and payment is cashless. Check the current gate hours. Member parking arrangements and organised events are separate from ordinary pedestrian entry.
Access and getting around: The National Trust identifies a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk, but no wheelchair access to the beach. Other terrain and gradients vary. Check the exact route and seasonal facilities; accessible toilet provision is not a promise of year-round opening.

Visiting with children: Choose a short boardwalk or nature walk for younger children, keeping to paths and supervising near the shore. Dogs must be kept on leads and controlled around grazing animals and wildlife.
