The Keep makes the city’s medieval origins tangible: thick stone walls, chambers and a rooftop perspective on the railway and river below. Include the separate Black Gate in your visit rather than treating the roof as the whole attraction. This is a compact but physically demanding heritage stop, best chosen by people who enjoy exploring stairs and old masonry.
Decide whether the Keep’s steep stairs suit everyone before buying admission; there is no roof-only ticket. The two buildings are separated by an outdoor crossing.

- Access and getting around
- The Black Gate has ramps, an external lift and an accessible toilet. The Keep has steep stairs and uneven surfaces; its upper floors are not wheelchair-accessible. Ask staff about buggy parking.

- Better for children interested in castles who can manage repeated steps. Supervise closely and allow breaks; a buggy cannot accompany the full Keep route.
