OAKHAM GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Birdwatching and quiet reserve trails / NEAR OAKHAM

Egleton Nature Reserve at Rutland Water

Start at the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre for a view over the reserve, then choose a short route to a few hides. The pleasure is in watching carefully and letting wildlife determine the pace, rather than trying to cover every trail. It is a separate nature visit from Oakham and not the same as a general lakeside leisure park.

Before you go

Ask the team what is being seen that day and choose a suitable route. Wildlife changes with the season: no particular bird, including an osprey, can be guaranteed.

The practical details

Where to find it
Egleton, near Oakham, Rutland LE15 8BT
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Buy the appropriate nature-reserve permit; the operator says day admission includes parking and same-day Lyndon entry. Check seasonal opening and any activity charges. Plan a separate transfer from Oakham rather than using a generic Rutland Water car park.
Access and getting around
The operator describes many wheelchair- and pushchair-friendly paths and hides, but not every route. Phone ahead about the electric buggy and ask which hides suit your needs; there are accessible toilets and parking.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Choose a small number of hides and a manageable walk, with quiet watching and a break. Bring suitable clothing and supervision beside water; only assistance dogs are allowed on the reserve.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–4 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
