Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel
Visit the massive castle walls on their rocky base near Dunbeg, then look for the ruined chapel in the surrounding woodland. The setting helps explain why this stronghold mattered, but much of the outing is outdoors. Combine it with the nearby Ocean Explorer Centre only when both are open and the group wants a longer excursion.
Check which areas are available before travelling. Visit Oban currently reports the north and northwest towers closed; the general castle listing is not a promise of unrestricted access.

- April–September: daily 9.30am–4.30pm. October–March: 10am–3.30pm, closed Thursday and Friday; last entry 30 minutes before closing. Christmas closure also applies. Check current restrictions and book the required date through HES.
- Access and getting around
- The castle entrance has 26 steep stone steps; upper routes add staircases. A rising gravel approach leads from parking, while the chapel path can be rough and boggy. The shop is step-free. Contact staff about closer drop-off arrangements and toilet needs.

- Choose for children comfortable with steep steps and historic ruins. Supervise at drops and on slippery surfaces; the indoor science centre is a better main choice when outdoor conditions are poor.
