McCaig’s Tower

Climb above the waterfront to the ring of stone arches on Battery Hill. The open-air monument and garden are a place to pause over the shape of the bay and its islands, rather than a conventional tower with indoor rooms to tour. Choose a clear spell for the view.

Before you go

Allow time for the ascent and descent as well as the viewpoint. If the hill does not suit, enjoy the tower’s silhouette from the waterfront instead.

Tickets and booking: No ordinary admission ticket. Visit in daylight and suitable weather, following any local restrictions. The community Wee Walk route via the tower and North Pier is 2.6km from the station clocktower; allow extra time for rests and sightseeing.
Access and getting around: Town approaches are steep and can involve steps. Wear footwear that copes with wet paving and use a route suited to your mobility. Ask locally about the closer road approach and current entrance arrangements if the climb is a barrier. Plan food and toilets in town.

Visiting with children: Keep children close at roads and viewpoints. Make the arches and boats below the focus of a short visit; the climb may be enough exercise without another long walk afterwards.
