Black Spout Wood and Waterfall

The Black Spout gives a short woodland outing a clear destination: a platform looking into the waterfall’s gorge. Paths climb through the trees on Pitlochry’s eastern side, with longer options continuing towards Edradour. For a town day, a return to the viewpoint is enough; you do not need to turn it into a longer circuit or an unplanned distillery visit.

Before you go

Use the signed paths and viewing platform, and turn back if surfaces or local barriers make the route unsuitable. The woodland climb has roots and uneven ground.

Where to find it: Black Spout Wood at the southeastern end of Pitlochry, reached from the Perth Road side.

Tickets and booking: No admission ticket is needed. Allow extra time if walking from the town centre and check local path notices after poor weather. Do not assume that an onward path to Edradour includes admission to that distillery or a confirmed tour.
Access and getting around: The route climbs on woodland paths, with exposed roots and raised stones. It is not a level surfaced stroll; a visitor-centre visit or Faskally’s easier trail may suit some groups better. Use town toilets before setting off and choose a shorter turnaround if the climb becomes uncomfortable.

Visiting with children: Keep children beside you near the gorge and on the platform, and make the waterfall the turnaround if they are tiring. Wear shoes that cope with wet leaves and uneven paths. Bring water and use town facilities before heading into the wood.
