National Marine Aquarium

The National Marine Aquarium is Plymouth’s substantial indoor ocean visit, with habitats that move the focus from nearby waters to the wider Atlantic and beyond. Give the large tanks time: a quieter few minutes watching animals move can be more absorbing than rushing to the next display. It makes a natural half-day anchor for families, followed by a meal and a short harbour walk.

Before you go

Book an arrival window and allow roughly three hours. The harbour footbridge is scheduled to close 22–26 September 2026; the marina detour needs extra time. Disabled parking bays are unavailable on 22, 24 and 25 September because of works.

Tickets and booking: Pre-book for all visitors, including complimentary annual-return-pass users and carers; walk-ins depend on capacity. Tickets use half-hour arrival windows, not a half-hour visit limit. Check proof requirements for a free carer place, ticket terms and current disruption notices before travelling.
Access and getting around: Ramps and lifts provide access around the aquarium, with accessible toilets and seating. Some areas are intentionally dark; the lower Atlantic exhibit depends on a lift for step-free access. Check live access notices on the booking page. Rear disabled bays have a roughly 300m ramped approach to the entrance and temporary September closures.

Visiting with children: Choose a few habitats to watch closely and build in a food break. Children under three currently enter free but still need inclusion in booking. Special Quiet at the Aquarium sessions offer an alternative for sensory needs on selected dates; check availability rather than assuming every visit is quiet.
