PLYMOUTH GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Harbours & walking / PLYMOUTH

The Barbican and Sutton Harbour

At the Barbican, Plymouth narrows into cobbled lanes, small shops and quayside places to eat. Combine Southside Street with a look over Sutton Harbour and the Mayflower Steps memorial, using the harbour as a starting point for understanding the city’s maritime connections. This is a neighbourhood to explore at your own pace rather than an attraction with a single entrance.

Before you go

Leave time for lunch here instead of passing through between bookings. A short waterside wander and one lane can be more enjoyable than trying to cover the whole harbour after a long museum visit.

The practical details

Where to find it
Southside Street and Sutton Harbour
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
No ticket is needed to explore public streets and the harbour frontage. Shops, food, museums and ferry trips have their own charges and hours. Check the aquarium booking page for the current footbridge notice if crossing to Coxside.
Access and getting around
Cobbles, narrow lanes and busy sections can make routes uneven or awkward for wheels. Choose your approach with the visitor information centre and allow for harbour-edge supervision. The aquarium footbridge is due to close 22–26 September 2026; use the route around the marina and allow extra time.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
A good place for boat spotting and a food break, with close supervision beside the harbour. Keep the walk short after the aquarium; streets can be busy and are not all traffic-free. Museum entry and boat trips are separate choices.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1–2 hours, plus a meal for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
