Plymouth Hoe

The Hoe is Plymouth’s broad, open outlook across the Sound: a place to watch movement on the water, walk between the monuments and sit without having to buy a ticket. The red-and-white lighthouse is part of the scene, but climbing it is a separate paid visit. Start here for the city’s geography, then descend towards the Barbican for the closer detail of harbour streets.

Before you go

Choose a clear part of the day and bring an extra layer. The exposed setting can feel very different from the sheltered streets; in strong wind a short look followed by an indoor visit is enough.

Tickets and booking: The public open space is free and normally accessible at any time. Events can alter access or the atmosphere; check notices for your date. Smeaton’s Tower, refreshments and any pool booking are additional costs.
Access and getting around: The council describes wide tarmac paths suitable for wheelchairs and prams, with seating around the park and seafront. Approaches involve gradients; lower shoreline routes and steps are not required for a promenade visit. Accessible public toilets are listed on Hoe Road near Valenti’s café.

Visiting with children: Room to pause and look at boats makes the Hoe useful between indoor visits. Supervise children near roads, edges and the waterfront. A view of Tinside Lido does not include a swim: pool sessions have separate seasonal arrangements.
