Mayflower Museum

The Mayflower Museum adds necessary depth to a visit to the memorial outside. Its exhibition begins with Wampanoag history and culture and considers English voyages, colonisation and their continuing consequences on both sides of the Atlantic. It is a compact historical visit for people who want to understand the story rather than simply photograph a departure landmark.

Before you go

Use the exhibition to give context to the Mayflower Steps, then leave time for the harbour outside. The tourist information centre shares the building and can help with local routes, but there are no public toilets inside.

The practical details

Where to find it
3–5 The Barbican, opposite the Mayflower Steps
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Paid admission, separate from the free tourist information service. April–October includes Sunday opening; November–March the museum is closed on Sundays. Confirm holiday dates and current prices: older promotional discounts and Christmas listings may remain online.
Access and getting around
The museum lists lift access to every floor, with exhibition access for wheelchairs, small mobility scooters, buggies and prams. A manual wheelchair is available. There are no public toilets in the building; accessible public facilities are nearby on the Barbican.

Visiting with children
Best for children interested in stories and history, with adults helping explain colonisation and the different perspectives presented. A shorter visit focused on one theme can work better than reading every panel. Combine it with a harbour break rather than another long museum session.

Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–75 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
