Smeaton’s Tower

The climb inside Smeaton’s Tower turns the Hoe’s landmark into a compact lesson in lighthouse life and engineering. Part of the former Eddystone lighthouse was moved here, and the small rooms lead to an elevated view across Plymouth Sound. Choose it if the ascent itself appeals; the free promenade outside already provides a rewarding sea view.

The climb involves 93 steps, steep ladders and small openings. Decide whether everyone can manage the descent as well as the ascent before paying, and use the nearby public toilets first.

Tickets and booking: Paid admission with advance and walk-up options. The 2026 season runs on selected dates to 1 November: Tuesday–Sunday through 27 September, then specified October weekends and half-term dates. It closes early at 3.30pm on 26 September. Check the calendar and occasional lunch closures before a special trip.
Access and getting around: The historic tower has no step-free route through its interior: 93 steps, steep ladders, low ceilings and small openings limit access. There are no toilets inside and food and drink are not allowed. Ask the operator about any specific mobility concern before booking.

Visiting with children: Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The confined climb suits children comfortable with ladders rather than every family; the Hoe outside is a good alternative for anyone waiting. Do not assume a pushchair can accompany the ascent.
