The Box

The Box brings Plymouth’s art, archives, natural history and relationship with the sea into one generous indoor visit. Large ship’s figureheads and the mammoth display give you immediate focal points, while the galleries let you follow a particular interest in more depth. It is a useful starting point before the waterfront because it explains the city beyond its postcard views.

Tickets and booking: General museum and gallery entry is free, with no normal admission booking needed. The usual pattern is Tuesday–Sunday, with selected bank-holiday Mondays; check current opening and gallery closures. Some activities and events are paid or booked separately.
Access and getting around: Step-free main entrance on Tavistock Place; lifts connect floors and accessible toilets, Changing Places and baby-changing facilities are available. A quiet space and pre-visit guides support sensory planning. Ask ahead about borrowing mobility equipment and any gallery or lift restrictions.
