PORTREE GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A separate hill walk north of Portree / NEAR PORTREE

Old Man of Storr walking route

Travel seven miles north of Portree to the Storr’s path network and climb towards its dramatic rock pinnacle. This is a steep, exposed walk that deserves its own half-day, not a quick photograph between other distant sights. The visitor facilities are at the road; the climb and descent provide the main outing.

Before you go

Allow at least the operator’s two-hour return-walk recommendation, and more for rests and photographs. Turn back when conditions or energy dictate rather than treating the pinnacle as a compulsory target.

The practical details

Where to find it
Storr visitor site and car park, A855, seven miles north of Portree, Trotternish, Isle of Skye
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary self-guided walking has no admission ticket, but vehicle parking is charged and spaces cannot be reserved. Ranger-guided walks are separate paid bookings. Check the outward and return bus if travelling without a car; do not assume Sunday service. Allow for current A855 traffic management.
Access and getting around
The route is steep and exposed, with uneven ground; roadside facilities do not make the hill accessible to everyone. There are toilets and baby changing at the site, with a RADAR-key accessible toilet. Wear supportive footwear and carry layers, water and a route you can use without relying on mobile signal.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Choose for children already comfortable with sustained uphill walking. Pack food and leave energy for the descent. A town walk is a better choice if the youngest child or the forecast makes the climb unsuitable.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 2–4 hours on site, plus travel for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
