A separate coastal castle outing / NEAR PORTRUSH
Dunluce Castle
Explore the roofless castle ruins on their cliff-edge site east of Portrush, with stories of the MacQuillan and MacDonnell families and the nearby lost town. The setting and surviving walls reward a focused visit, but this is an outdoor historic monument, not a sheltered town-centre attraction. Arrange the journey out and back before setting off.

Check with the castle before travelling in extreme weather: the site can close for visitor safety. Allow time for the ruins and return transport rather than treating a view from the road as the same experience as entry.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- 87 Dunluce Road, near Bushmills BT57 8UY; about three miles east of Portrush
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Ordinary admission is paid; carers enter free under the operator’s policy. The current tourism listing says advance booking is not required. Check seasonal opening, last entry and current charges directly. Only assistance dogs are permitted; organise food and your return journey separately.
- Access and getting around
- The historic site has limited wheelchair access and uneven surfaces. Contact the castle about the parts of the route you can use and current toilet arrangements before travelling. A distant exterior viewpoint is not a substitute for confirming access to the paid ruins.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Children under sixteen must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Keep children close on historic paths and near changes of level, and bring layers for the coast. Choose a shorter visit if wind or tiredness makes exploring the ruins uncomfortable.
Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
