West Strand and promenade

Walk the promenade beside West Bay for a compact introduction to Portrush, with the harbour at the northern end and the town close behind. This is a useful choice when you want a shorter seafront visit, a meal and an easy decision about whether to stay longer. The beach and the paved promenade give different ways to enjoy the view.

Before you go

Use the promenade when you want to avoid walking on sand, but keep an eye on conditions beside the sea. West Strand has its own lifeguard schedule; do not assume that a patrol at East Strand means this beach is covered.

Tickets and booking: Public beach and promenade access has no attraction admission fee. Parking can be charged seasonally and food costs extra. Follow current dog restrictions and tide/weather notices. Shops and amusements nearby have their own opening hours.
Access and getting around: A pedestrian and cycle promenade runs beside the beach. Share the route considerately and check the particular entrance, gradients and kerbs that suit you. The council lists accessible toilets and parking, but the sand is not equivalent to the paved route.

Visiting with children: A short promenade walk, snack and sand play may suit younger children better than a long beach traverse. Keep children away from harbour edges and close near waves. Check the beach’s own patrol flags before considering water activities.
