Southsea Castle

Henry VIII’s coastal fort puts Portsmouth’s defensive history beside the open sea. Explore the keep and take in the Solent outlook from the upper parts where accessible. The compact site works well as a second stop after the D-Day Story, or as the focus of a modest free-entry outing.

Before you go

The historic attraction opens seasonally, normally Tuesday to Sunday from April to October. A year-round café opening is not confirmation that the keep is open.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary historic-attraction entry is free during its open season. Check dates and event restrictions; refreshments and special events are separate.
Access and getting around: The courtyard is at ground level but is largely cobbled. The keep and ramparts require stairs; a ground-floor film offers an alternative. An accessible toilet is available. Contact the castle if you need help choosing a route.

Visiting with children: Supervise children around walls, guns and steps. Use the castle as a short exploration rather than promising a large interactive museum.
