Fife gives you a choice between a coastal university town and a city with royal and industrial stories. St Andrews combines museums, golf heritage and West Sands; Dunfermline offers an abbey-centred historic quarter, Carnegie connections and Pittencrieff Park. Our present collection concentrates on these two places rather than every fishing village and stretch of the Fife coast. They sit in different parts of the area, so choose one as the main day out. A good visit does not require crossing Fife simply to collect a second famous name.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
St Andrews suits visitors interested in university collections, coastal scenery and historic ruins as well as golf. Choose the Wardlaw Museum, the World Golf Museum or a castle visit as the main focus, then allow time for the town or West Sands. Access to individual ruins and grounds must be checked before travelling. A beach walk is a different activity from an indoor museum, and playing a famous course requires arrangements of its own.
Dunfermline lets you build a day around the abbey area, Carnegie Library & Galleries and Pittencrieff Park. The Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum adds a more personal historical thread. Abbey, palace and church visitor arrangements are not necessarily one single admission or timetable. Choose the parts that interest you and leave time for the park, rather than trying to fit every historic building into one uninterrupted indoor circuit.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
St Andrews is the stronger choice when sea air and a university-town atmosphere matter; Dunfermline suits a compact heritage plan and park time. A two-place visit needs a real transfer between them, not an assumed short hop. With two days, use one for each and keep the beach walk flexible around weather. This guide does not present the full Fife coastal route as a day trip between the two.
Start in the abbey area during the appropriate visitor opening period, then choose Carnegie Library & Galleries or the Birthplace Museum for a second perspective. Pause for lunch before spending time in Pittencrieff Park. With a shorter visit, keep one historic interior and the nearby park. A performance at the Alhambra belongs in a separately timed evening plan with a checked return journey.
West Sands gives families a clear outdoor reason to choose St Andrews when conditions suit; its museums add alternatives to a beach-only visit. Dunfermline’s park and galleries provide a different balance with less dependence on the coast. Couples can choose university collections and a coastal walk or the abbey quarter and a slower lunch. Golf knowledge is not a requirement for enjoying St Andrews, and golf access should never be assumed from simply visiting the town.
Public park time in Dunfermline and beach walking at St Andrews can keep an outing affordable. The Wardlaw Museum and Carnegie Library & Galleries provide useful indoor starting points; check current entry and exhibition arrangements before going. Coastal ruins are not all-weather interiors, and a museum visit may be a better use of a wet afternoon than a long transfer to another outdoor attraction. Keep money aside for travel and meals even on a free-entry route.
St Andrews has no railway station in the town: a rail journey through Leuchars needs an onward connection. For Dunfermline, check which station and walking route best suit the historic centre. The two places are not stops on a single simple coastal rail itinerary. Plan the actual connection and last return before adding a second destination, and leave time for the walk from the final attraction.
