Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden

Explore the scale of the abbey ruins, then follow a selected route into the designed water garden. The contrast between monastic stonework and carefully arranged water, trees and views makes this a substantial outing near Ripon. The estate is large enough that choosing a shorter circuit is often more rewarding than trying to reach every viewpoint.

Before you go

The Studley Royal tea room and entrance between the deer park and water garden closed on 7 September 2026 for construction, expected until winter 2027/28. Use the Visitor Centre or West Gate for the abbey and water garden; Studley car park currently serves the deer park only.

Tickets and booking: Check admission, membership arrangements and the exact date before travelling. The abbey and water garden normally close on most Fridays in November–January for the separate shoot, and other holiday closures apply. The estate is about four miles from Ripon; plan transport and the correct entrance rather than using the postcode alone.
Access and getting around: West Gate is the level-access arrival option recommended by the National Trust. The Visitor Centre approach to the abbey is steep; ruins include uneven stone and grass that can become muddy. Reserve mobility equipment ahead and choose from the current access map. Volunteer transport is subject to availability and does not serve Studley Royal during construction.

Visiting with children: Choose a manageable ruins-and-garden circuit and leave time for food or the play area near the Visitor Centre. Water edges, uneven ground and the distance back to your entrance matter. The play area and level-access West Gate are on different parts of the site.
